 Definition of Explanation Text

Explanation is a text which tells processes relating to forming of natural, social, scientific and cultural phenomena. Explanation text is to say ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the forming of the phenomena. It is often found in science, geography and history text books


Purpose of Explanation Text

1. Explanation is a text which tells processes relating to forming of natural, social, scientific, and cultural phenomena.

2. To explain how or why something happens.


The structure of the Explanation Text consists of 2 parts

1. General Statement

The General Statement is the first part of the Explanation Text which is located in the first paragraph. This section has a function to provide a general explanation of events or phenomena that will be discussed in a text. General Statements can contain an understanding of an event or phenomenon and several sentences containing a general explanation of the event or phenomenon.

2. Sequenced of Explanation

Sequenced of Explanation is the next section of this type of text and is located in the next paragraph after the General Statement paragraph. This section has a function to provide an explanation of why and how an event or phenomenon can occur or be created. The explanation is in the form of the processes of the formation of these events which are written sequentially. This Sequenced of Explanation section usually answers the questions "How" (how) and "Why" (why) and can be written in more than one paragraph.

Notes: Explanation text does not have a closing part in its structure. Some people think that the last paragraph in explanation text is the closing or closing part of this type of text. However, the last part of this type of text is the last process of the occurrence or formation of an event or phenomenon. [sc:adsense code]

1. Focused on general group rather than spesific 

2. Use a linking word like, in general, rather, for instance

3. Use action verbs like breaks, erupts

4. Use present tense

5. Use passive voice 

6. Reference to people should not be given

7. Use of technical terms and language relavants to the subjects.
